Permanent Position at the NAO

 

 The National Astronomical Observatory (NAO) – Rozhen is offering a permanent position for a young specialist. Applicants should fulfill the following requirements:

-          have a University degree in Physics or another natural science;

-          have computer proficiency including: good knowledge of different operating systems (e.g. Windows and different UNIX-based systems) and  experience in programming (e.g in Fortran, C/C++, Java, PHP, Perl, etc.);

-          to be proficient in the reduction and analysis of astronomical images and be acquainted with the current data reduction packages (IRAF, MIDAS, IDL, including the astronomical libraries of  IDL, etc.);

-          have experience in creating and maintaining web pages;

-          to be proficient in at least two foreign languages, one of which should be English, to a level sufficient for writing scientific papers and communicating with referees and foreign partners;

-          have a driving license. 

The successful applicant is expected to:

-          work and live at the National Astronomical Observatory  (situated at altitude of 1750 m and distance of 10 km to  the nearest town);

-          be able to work with all the available telescopes  and supporting instruments: cameras, spectrographs, narrow- and wide-band filters, instruments for obtaining polarimetric and interferometric images  etc.;

-          to participate in the everyday maintenance of the Observatory's infrastructure;

-          when needed, to help the engineers with the maintenance and development of the telescopes and the supporting  instruments;

-          to participate in the planned nightly astronomical observations;

-          to be able to communicate with both the media and the public whenever required, to be able to give public talks in Bulgarian and other languages acquainting the visitors at NAO with the nature of the work performed at the Observatory and the infrastructure.

The listed above activities are expected to occupy 50% of the time of the   successful applicant. The other 50%, the applicant is expected to be involved in front-edge scientific work in astronomy and publish the results in refereed international journals (at least 1 paper per year). The activities at the NAO-Rozhen are performed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

 

The monthly salary of the successful applicant would be 364 BGN (equivalent of  ˆ 186).
