Supernova in the Galaxy M51 (Whirlpool)

June 6, 2011

Last some nights the most popular astronomical object for observations on the night sky is the Supernova SN2011dh in the Galaxy M51 (Whirlpool). For first time the Supernova is observed on 01 June 2011 with 14.1 magnitudes (The Galaxy M51 is 8.4 magnitudes, for comparison).

Exploding of Supernova is a stage of a massive star. The Supernova extreme increases with more than 15 magnitudes. In such a colossal explosion, the brightness of the star for weeks or months is comparable to that of the galaxy in which it is located. Supernova explosions is associated with release of enormous amount of energy (1042-1044J), which is equal to the energy released when an outbreak of 10 trillion hydrogen bombs.
